Description
Growth hormone releasing peptide 6 (GHRP-6) (development code name SKF-110679), also known as growth hormone releasing hexapeptide, is one of many synthetic analogs methane-encephalin which contain non-D amino acids. Natural, developed for its growth hormone releasing activity and called growth hormone secretagogues. They lack opioid activity but are powerful stimulators of the release of growth hormone (GH). These secretagogues differ from growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) in that they do not share any sequence relationship and derive their function by activating a completely different receptor. This receptor was originally called the secretagogue growth hormone receptor (GHSR), but due to later discoveries the hormone ghrelin is now considered a natural endogenous receptor ligand and has been renamed the ghrelin receptor. Thus, these GHSR agonists act as synthetic ghrelin mimetics.
When GHRP-6 and insulin are co-administered, the response of GH to GHRP-6 has been shown to improve (1). However, the consumption of carbohydrates and / or dietary fat around the GH secretion delivery window significantly reduces GH release. A new study in normal mice showed significant differences in body composition, muscle growth, glucose metabolism, memory, and heart function in mice treated with GHRP-6 (2). There are still many questions about this relatively new association.
